As a result of Cemig’s efforts in 2011, several segments of society have recognized the excellence of their work, which has seen them receive various awards, among which the following stand out:
Dow Jones Sustainability World Index – 2011/2012
Cemig was once again selected to be a part of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) in the period 2011/2012. The Company has now has a record of being on this Index for 12 years running, and is still the only one in the electric energy sector in Latin America to be a part of DJSI World since it was created in 1999.
DJSI World is made up of shares of the major companies which, in their different economic sectors, are distinguished for their acknowledged corporate sustainability, capable of creating long term value for shareholders, for succeeding in making the most of opportunities and manage risks associated with economic, environmental and social factors. The Index composition is renewed annually and has become a world benchmark for investor and foreign funds managers who base their investment decision-making on its performance.
Being part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index reflects Cemig’s responsibility in conducting its activities and its commitment to both current and future generations. Cemig is ceaselessly seeking to improve its corporate sustainability practices by bringing them into line with the best corporate management practices, respect for the environment and society’s well-being.
Corporate Sustainability Index – ISE Bovespa
For the seventh time running, the Company was selected to be part of the Corporate Sustainability Index portfolio – ISE Bovespa of the São Paulo Stock Exchange – BM&FBOVESPA for 2011/2012.
The purpose of ISE Bovespa is to reflect the return on a portfolio made up of shares of companies listed on the BM&FBovespa that are recognized as being committed to corporate sustainability, that is, to creating long term value for their shareholders, and are more prepared to maximize corporate opportunities while minimizing risks connected with their activities. The criteria for selecting these companies is managed by CES- FGV - the Getúlio Vargas Foundation Center for Sustainability Studies.
The new portfolio is in effect from January 2 to December 31, 2012 and combines 51 shares of 38 companies. They represent 18 sectors and have a total market value of R$ 961 billion, the equivalent to 43.72% of the joint market value of the companies with shares traded on BM&FBOVESPA on 11/23/11.
National Quality Award - Outstanding in Distribution & Outstanding in Generation and Transmission
Cemig was ranked as Outstanding in the National Quality Awards (NQA), Brazil’s most important management award. The Awards are presented by FNQ - National Quality Foundation. The awards were presented to Cemig Distribuição and Cemig Geração e Transmissão, both wholly owned subsidiaries, under the Processes category and the Customer category. Now in its 20th edition, the National Quality Award promotes management quality improvement and growth in competitiveness among Brazilian organizations. Cemig Distribuição was a finalist last year.
On applying to the National Quality Award, Cemig was submitted to an in-depth analysis of its management. In the first phase, reports were drawn up detailing the management practices of each company. Next, Cemig was visited by members of the examining board, who settled doubts arising from reading the reports. At this stage, the part Cemig’s staff played was fundamental in clarifying the Company’s management practices.
Companies that Best Communicate with Journalists – Negócios de Comunicação Magazine.
The quality of the relationship Cemig has with the media was certified by the “Companies that Best Communicate with Journalists” Award, presented by the Negócios de Comunicação (Communications Business) Magazine. In the electric energy sector, Cemig was ranked among the best three companies based on a survey conducted among 2.5 thousand journalists from all over Brazil.
A survey the Company conducted shows that in 2010 alone 4,115 inquiries from the Brazilian and international press were attended to, including demands for information, interviews and institutional material. As to their origin, 84% come from regional media, 15% from the Brazilian press and 1% from the foreign press.
Printed media vehicles account for 38% of the requests, followed by television stations with 30%, radio (18%), news sites (7%) and other segments with 7%).
3rd Abap Sustainability Award: Company
In 2011, Cemig was again granted a distinguished position at the Abap Sustainability Award ceremony, winning first place in the Company category. The award, now in its 3rd edition, is presented by Abap-MG - the Brazilian Advertising Agencies Association - Minas Gerais regional office, and acknowledges the work done by companies working to promote the State’s cultural, social and environmental development.
2nd “Friend-of-Sport Businessman” Award, presented by the Ministry of Sport – winner of “Best Friend of Regional Sport” and third place in the “Dedication and Incentive to Sport” category.
In acknowledgement for its incentive to sport in the State, the Company distinguished itself in two categories in the second edition of the “Friend-of-Sport Businessman” Award, presented by the Ministry of Sport in 2011. The Company won first place in the “Best Friend of Regional Sport” and third place in the “Dedication and Incentive to Sport” category.
The “Best Friend of Regional Sport” category awards companies investing in sports and para-sports projects in 19 Brazilian states. Cemig took first place in the category, as the Company that invested most in sports activities in Minas Gerais, while the award for the “Dedication and Incentive to Sport” category for the whole of Brazil honors companies that reached their full potential for the incentive, that is, 1% of their total Income Tax due, and which have voluntarily requested that this percentage be invested in sporting projects.
Second place in the Energy Sector – The Best of Dinheiro Magazine Award / Isto É Dinheiro. 1st Place for Human Resources, 2nd for Corporate Governance and 3rd for Financial Sustainability.
Cemig was once again recognized for its work in the electric energy sector: the Company took 2nd place overall in the energy sector for The Best of Dinheiro Magazine Award, presented by the IstoÉ Dinheiro Magazine. The Award paid tribute to the most outstanding companies in 27 sectors of the economy.
In the electric energy sector, Cemig was ranked as outstanding in three management assessments: 1st place for Human Resources, 2nd place for Corporate Governance and 3rd place for Financial Sustainability. The Company competed with companies such as AES, Companhia Paranaense de Energia (COPEL), Neoenergia and EDP.
Anefac-Fepecafi-Serasa Award – Transparency Trophy
The quality and clarity of Cemig’s financial statements were recognized again. For the eighth time running the Company won the Transparency Trophy, granted by Anefac-Fipecaf-Serasa-Experian, and was also honored at the award ceremony for its track record.
The Company was presented with an award in the category “Open Capital Companies” with sales of over R$ 8 billion, among the ten open capital companies with the best financial statements in Brazil.
The Transparency Trophy assesses the quality and degree of information contained in the statements and explanatory notes, the transparency of the information provided, the quality and consistency of the management report, compliance with accounting principles, among others.
Abrasca Award for the Best Reports – Honorable Mention
Cemig’s 2011 annual report was classified as outstanding in the “Strategy” category among the open capital companies with sales of over R$ 8 billion which competed this year for the Transparency Trophy presented by Anefac-Fipecafi-Serasa-Experian at the 13th Abrasca Award ceremony, held by Abrasca - the Brazilian Open Capital Companies Association, which was created in order to help companies improve the quality of information presented to the market and in so doing enhance corporate governance mechanisms.
Cemig was also awarded as one of the ten open capital companies with the best financial statements in Brazil. The Transparency Trophy assesses the quality and degree of information contained in the statements and explanatory notes, the transparency of information provided, the quality and consistency of the management report, compliance with accounting principles, among others.
Coge Foundation Award – People Empowerment and Development Category – “Succession Management Program”
In 2011 Cemig received the COGE Foundation Award, in the People Empowerment and Development category, for the “Succession Management Program”. The Award is in recognition of the Company’s efforts to develop leaders and understand that people are among the main factors that enable the Company to deal with the changes resulting from the challenges and strategic imperatives faced.
For the Company, planning replacement of key-positions in the organization means ensuring business sustainability, in order to not allow for any ruptures with management continuity.
