Environmental Education Program · GOALS · PROJECTS · ACTIVITIES
Raised Environmental Awareness and Environmental Preservation programs, which the company has been implementing for children all over the state, are already part of Cemigs culture. More than 100,000 children have taken part in these programs, which take advantage of Cemigs exhibitions and the natural reserves premises, such as those at Peti, Volta Grande, Jacob, Galheiro, Itutinga and Igarapé.
Cemig employed formal guidelines in the definition of the Program for Raised Environmental Awareness and Environmental Preservation, started in the 90s. By doing so, the Company enabled the schools, which act as multiplication agents, to continue developing the program after the field trips. This partnership is intended to provide public and private students from elementary to high school levels in the Great Metropolitan BH area a visit to the Peti Environmental Station. Cemig has become involved in environmental education for the following reasons: social commitments; the companys image; the promotion of sustainable development and a desire to raise environmental awareness so as to effect a change in attitudes.
The program adopts pedagogical practices that stimulate team work through interactive activities involving teachers and students in the knowledge production process.
When visiting the reserve, students get acquainted with flora and fauna preservation areas that include ponds and riparian forests, which are essential components of a rivers ecosystem. This project is intended to raise participants awareness of the environmental changes by showing them that there can be no development without the preservation of the air quality, rivers, water springs, forests and communitys dignity.
Using videos, lectures and field trips, this program imbues students and teachers with the rationale behind the companys environmental measures and actions: the preservation of the environment in an effort to develop and promote new environmental ethics to guarantee the responsible preservation of life on Earth.
The program is designed to show the importance of preserving the remaining stretches of forest, river banks and aquatic and terrestrial life while raising the spirits of children and teenagers. The Riparian Reforestation Program is conceived of with the goals of legislation compliance, protection of the reservoirs against erosion and silting, and the providing of terrestrial and aquatic fauna with shelter, support and feeding grounds.
Fish restocking is carried out to assist in the maintenance of those fish species that are native to the local river basins.
Inventories of fauna and flora were conducted in and around the Peti, Galheiro, Jacob and Volta Grande Environmental Stations and Preserves. Many of the mammals, birds reptiles, insects, plant and fish identified in those regions are threatened species, such as the Red-ruffed fruitcrow, Puma, Masked titi, Maned-wolf, among others. Environmental Stations serve as preservation areas meant for the protection of the biodiversity found there in.
